The Canal at Fort St Angelo, Birgu

This picture is of the rear of St Angelo, and it clearly shows the gap between the fort and the remainder of Birgu. The picture also contains two bridges and a disused fish cage. The Fish Cage (unlikely to have been there in either 1551 or 1565) is the thing in the foreground with blue and orange floats supporting it. Behind the right hand side of the fish cage (which is not currently used) is a low bridge over which you drive a car (which we did) on the approach to the only extant entrance to the fort. The bridge spans the Canal which is an inlet of water from Galley creek which goes across the rear of the fort towards Kalkara creek, but does not meet it (see the map). The high bridge (the one with three arches) bridges a solid rock link between St Angelo and Birgu. At the time this photo was taken, the right hand side of the high bridge and its rock causeway were being demolished for some unknown reason. The bridge used to reach right across to the streets and houses of Birgu - and the signs from Birgu to St Angelo all direct tourists to this bridge, until you get to the point where you are stopped dead by the lack of bridge where one used to be. |

You can see more clearly in this picture (taken from Kalkara Creek at the other end of the canal) the demolition work currently underway on the high bridge. |
