The Citadel, Victoria, Gozo
Click on the Hotspots for more information
The main town of Gozo is now named Victoria (after a Queen-Empress of that name) and consists of the Citadel (the ancient part of the town which is shown here) and Rabat (the suburb). Victoria/Rabat amazingly has two full size opera houses which, considerin that the population of Gozo, is quite amazing. The opera houses are run by competing companies which apparently loathe and detest each other (simple loathing never seems to be enough...).

Note that this map is not totally accurate. Also, that many of the pathways, especially those around the perimeter, run along the top of the fortifications and looks down on the buildings. Note the amount of derelict space in the Citadel. Given that, when at the peak of its usefulness, it needed space to house refugees from the rest of Gozo, and their animals, it may be that some of the derelict areas were always roofless compounds. However, it is also true that the narrow streets of Gozo made living difficult, and once the threat from the Turks was past, it was more convenient for people to live in the remainder of Victoria (which was known as Rabat before 1897, and still often is)
