Cathedral of St Magnus

St Magnus's Cathedral, Kirkwall

The West Front of St Magnus's Cathedral in Kirkwall. Technically, it is no longer a Cathedral as the Church of Scotland does not have Bishoprics. However, it is always referred to as St Magnus's Cathedral.

The cathedral from the South Side, taken from within the ruins of the Bishop's Palace (MF).
South Side
Pillars The pillars to the right hand side of the main door - reduced somewhat by exposure to the Orkney weather.

The main aisle of the Cathdral, facing towards the East end. Churches always have the Altar (as, as most Protestants would say, Communion Table) at the East end.

You can clearly see the thick romanesque pillars. The arches are slightly pointy meaning that the Church is not entirely romanesque in nature,.

Tomb stones within the Cathedral - some what reminiscent of the imagery on the Jerusalemkerk Altar
