Kirkwall is the capital of Orkney, and is situated on 'Mainland', facing north towards Shipinsay. It is on an isthmus between the West Mainland and East Mainlay, and you tend to pass through it an awful lot. As capital, it was the main seat of the Bishops and Earls of Orkney. |
