The Orkney Islands are about 7 miles north of Scotland, and consist of around 40 islands. The largest island is, confusingly, named 'Mainland' and is linked causeways (built during World War 2) to South Ronaldsay.

You can get to Orkney by ferry from Scrabster (the port of Thurso) to Stromness, or by air from Wick to Kirkwall. There is also a seasonal ferry from John O'Groats to South Ronaldsay.
