Saddell 2007 Monday 23rd April 2007 to Friday 27th April 2007 Thursday 26th - Isle of Arran Day |
0730
|
We depart from the main gates of the Saddell Estate by coach at 0730, and head north for the short trip to the Claonaig Ferry via Carradale. We're sorry about the early start - but we need to start this early in order to pick people up from Carradale and meet the Ferry in time. |
| Claonaig | We cross the Kilbrannan Sound on the Ferry |
| Lochranza | After the 30 minute ferry ride, we land at Lochranza (which is next to Loch Ranza), where we'll stop at the castle |
Brodick Castle ![]() |
Then we head through the northern pass on the way to the capital of Arran: Brodick, with its castle (once besieged by Matthew Lennox) |
| Entrance to the castle is included in the cost of the day (you get a discount if you are a member of the National Trust for Scotland or the National Trust) At the castle, we'll pass through the gift shop, which sells a nice selection of cheeses as well as the usual jams, honeys, books, shortbread, and celtic jewellery. Then it's round the castle, with knowledgeable guides posted in each room to answer any questions - we will also have a formal talk about the Castle and area. There is the obligatory cell which once held Robert the Bruce (and I wouldn't be surprised if Mary Queen of Scots slept here once). He's also supposed to have seen his Spider on Arran (but lots of other places too!) . |
|
| Lunch & Afternoon |
After the trip around the castle, there will be a chance for you to buy a late lunch at the castle dining room (which is just by the very interesting Victorian kitchen), and then on out into the Gardens to enjoy them (or else just sit in the dining room and chat). Then it's back to the coach, for the ride back to Lochranza and the ferry for home. |
| Evening | In the evening, we'll have a Barbecue in the environs of Saddell Castle, with some entertainment.
